Island hopping from secluded beaches and turquoise seas to rainforests, limestone caves and starry skies, experience the true essence of Andamans

When we think of the Andamans, we think of white sand beaches, turquoise seas, tropical rainforests and terrific night skies. With over 300 islands, the Andamans have all of these and more.

Yet most itineraries limit them to the same three hotspots: Port Blair, Havelock and Neil. Sure, they are beautiful.

But what about the beaches beyond Havelock? The dense rainforests of Andaman? The little islands that you reach by ferry and boat? The surreal night skies where you can sit for hours counting stars ?

That’s the side of Andamans we want to show you.

Yes, you must experience Port Blair and hear the stories of Cellular Jail. But you also hop across 5 islands, watch sunsets from ferries and ride small boats through mangrove-lined creeks. You walk through dense rainforests to ancient limestone caves, cycle across Neil Island, and snorkel in the crystal waters of secluded beaches no one knows exist.

You don’t always have to visit Thailand or the Maldives to experience the magic of an island archipelago.

It's right here in our own backyard.

Our program designer, Abhishek Tiwari, explored the length and breadth of Andamans to handpick experiences. He came back from his exploration saying, “I had seen Bali’s beaches and thought nothing could beat them. But what I saw in the Andamans trumps them any day. It makes me proud of what our country has to offer.”

That’s Unexplored Andamans for us.

Your 6 Days at Unexplored Andamans

We have designed our Unexplored Experiences in a way that you get to experience the true essence of Andamans, but in the most authentic way, unspoiled by commercialisation.

  1. Explore Port Blair and the Colonial History of the Cellular Jail

Your Unexploration starts at Chakoram, our homestay in Port Blair (Shri Vijayapuram). Please make sure you reach by 1 PM.

After lunch, visit the Cellular Jail. Our Experience Leaders bring the place alive with stories from British rule over the Andaman Islands. Take your time walking through the corridors and cells where some of the darkest episodes of India’s freedom struggle unfolded.

In the evening, watch the Light and Sound Show, which narrates the history of human migration and colonialism in the Andaman Islands.

Homestay in Port Blair (Shri Vijayapuram)
  2. Through the Jarawa Reserve to Baratang and the Parrot Island Cruise

Start the day with a morning walk by the Andaman Sea in the heart of Port Blair, as the city slowly wakes up around you.

After breakfast, head to Jirkatang and drive through the dense tropical rainforests of the Jarawa Tribal Reserve in a guarded convoy.

At Nilambur Jetty, you drive your vehicle straight onto a ferry and cross the Middle Strait to Baratang.

After lunch, cruise through a wide tidal creek towards Parrot Island. Watch the ancient tidal forests and Jarawa huts along the shore.

As the sun sets, witness magical hues of orange, red and purple play across the sky and the water from your boats.

Head back to our stay at the Coral Creek Resort for the night.

    Creek-Side Resort at Baratang Island
  3. Mangroves and Limestone Caves of Baratang. Cruise to Long Island

Start your day with a boat ride through a narrow tidal creek canopied by dense mangroves. From the jetty, walk to the Baratang Limestone Caves, hidden deep within the forest.

Most visitors rush through Baratang in a few hours. We’ve designed this day to avoid the crowds, so we have the entire cave network to ourselves. Walk through limestone formations shaped by seawater over millennia as your Experience Leader shares the stories behind this geological wonder.

Have breakfast and take a ferry to Long Island from Yeratta.

At Long Island, walk through the village with your Experience Leader, see firsthand how coconut oil is made, and experience everyday island life.

In the evening, step out of your stay at Wood's Bay Resort onto the seaside path that runs right past it. It’s the best place on the island to watch the sunset.

    Seaside Stay at Long Island
  4. Day-Out Among the White Sand Beaches and Turquoise Waters of Andaman

Today is your day to enjoy the white sands and turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. We have handpicked secluded beaches that give you the best of the Andamans without the crowds.

Start your day with a ferry from Long Island to Lalaji Bay. Have breakfast on the beach, take a dip in the sea and explore the forest behind the bay. After lunch, we head to Merk Bay.

If you know how to swim, your Experience Leader will take you snorkelling among corals and marine life.

In the evening, take a boat ride to Guitar Island and watch another stunning sunset from the open seas.

Retire at the Wood's Bay Resort in Long Island for the day.

    Seaside Stay at Long Island
  5. Guided Snorkelling and Exploring Neil Island on a Bicycle

From Long Island, we take a long ferry to Neil Island, crossing the deep blue waters of the open sea.

At Neil, your Experience Leader takes you off the coast for a guided snorkelling experience.

See corals, shoals of colourful fish and, if you’re lucky, sea turtles.

Later in the day, cycle across the island at your own pace to the Natural Rock Bridge.

Walk along the rocky shore and take a close look at fish and corals in the shallow, crystal-clear water at your feet.

Retire for the day at the Royal Neil Resort, at stone's throw from the beach. At night, witness a gazallion stars against the dark island skies.

Seaside Stay at Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)
  6. Explore a Secluded Beach on Neil Island

On our last morning, spend unhurried time at a secluded beach, flanked by dense forests on the Neil Island.

After breakfast, gather for a debriefing to close Unexplored Andamans. We hope you leave understanding these islands a little better, and seeing India differently.

We end the Unexploration at Neil deliberately, so you can choose to stay back for scuba diving. Scuba isn’t part of the itinerary but you can stay back after Day 6 and dive with a certified operator. If you need help here, let us know in advance and we'll arrange everything for you.

You can also choose to head back to Port Blair. There are Government ferries leaving for Port Blair at 3.30 PM from Neil. Let us know and we'll arrange tickets for you.

Trip Ends: Neil Island at 1 PM

Highlights of Unexplored Andamans

Unexplored Andamans takes you across the archipelago in ways that few get to experience: by ferry, by boat and on foot. Hop across 5 islands, glide through mangrove creeks and walk through rainforests to ancient limestone caves. Learn the story of Cellular Jail in Port Blair, cycle across Neil and spend time on beaches few people know exist.

White Sand Beaches of Long Island and Neil Island

Start a morning with breakfast on the beach at Lalaji Bay, swim off Merk Bay's white sand and snorkel among corals and fish. Watch the sunset from Guitar Island, and end the trip with an unhurried morning on a secluded beach at Neil Island.

Mangrove Creeks and Tidal Forests of Baratang

At Baratang, take a boat ride through narrow tidal creeks under a dense canopy of mangroves. On your Sunset Cruise to Parrot Island at sunset, ride through a wide tidal channel lined by tall mangrove forests with Jarawa huts along the shore.

Ferries and Boat Rides across the Archipelago

In the Andamans, getting around is part of the experience. Board the government ferry at Nilambur Jetty with your vehicle on deck, cross to Long Island from Yeratta, and ride across open blue ocean to Neil Island. Smaller boats take you to Lalaji Bay, Guitar Island and the mangrove creeks. Witnessing Sunset colours on these ferries is an incredible experience.

Limestone Caves of Baratang

Reaching the caves is half the adventure. A boat carries you through a narrow mangrove creek, then a wooden bridge and forest trail lead to the entrance. Inside, the limestone formations show how slowly water has shaped this island over millenia.

Our Hand-Picked Places to Stay

We choose places that let you experience the everyday life of the Andamans, rather than simply giving you a place to stay. On Unexplored Andamans, you spend your nights in five very different stays: three by the sea, one beside a tidal creek and one in the heart of Port Blair.

Day 1: Chakoram Homestay

  • Homestay at the Heart of Port Blair

Port Blair (Shri Vijayapuram)

Your first night is at Chakoram, a homestay in Port Blair. The homestay is away from the bustle of the city centre. Yet, the seaside walks, the Cellular Jail and the rest of Port Blair are all easily accessible. The rooms accommodate two to three people, and the house has the facilities you need to stay comfortable.

Day 2: Coral Creek Resort

  • Stay by a Tidal Creek

Baratang Island

On your second night, you stay at Coral Creek Resort on Baratang Island.

Most travellers visit Baratang on a day trip from Port Blair, so the caves and creeks get crowded by mid-morning. Staying on the island lets you set out early and reach the limestone caves way before other visitors arrive. The rooms accommodate two people.

Day 3 & 4: Wood's Bay Resort

  • Stay by the Sea

Long Island

For the next two nights, you stay at Wood's Bay on Long Island. This is our favourite stay with a lawn running from your rooms straight down to the sea. A paved trail follows the coast from here. Experience incredible sunsets by the sea at an arm’s length from your stay. At low tide, you can even walk out to rock pools and stretches of shore that stay underwater the rest of the day. The rooms accommodate two people.

Day 5: Royal Neil Resort

  • Stay in a Secluded Sea-Side Resort

Neil Island

Your last night is at Royal Neil Resort on Neil Island. It is a private stay. Given that Neil is a popular destination, there are very few places where you enjoy this seclusion. The rooms accommodate two people.

What 5 Days of Unexplored Andamans Actually Look Like!

Our story and why we started Unexplored India

Over the last 17 years, we’ve trekked through some of the most beautiful, diverse landscapes in our country. But we also know how different travelling through India can feel. We've realised that some of the most interesting parts of our country don't make it onto a typical tourist itinerary.

They are found in the small details and little moments. A village temple, the family kitchen, an old house, a local festival. Maybe a conversation with someone who has lived there all their life. These things don't always fit neatly into a sightseeing list, but stay with you longer. This is what we look for when we travel. Journeys that give people the time and space to look closer and travel deeper.

This is Unexplored India.

We believe that when you understand a place a little better, you begin to see it differently. Our hope is that, along the way, you also rediscover something that makes you feel proud of India too.

Arjun Majumdar is the Founder & CEO of Indiahikes. In this video he talks about why we started Unexplored India after 17 years of leading treks and what it means to travel this way through the country.
